AI enters businesses and fraud prevention: how it is integrated matters
This selection brings together three verified developments: a European report on business adoption and two announcements about fraud protection. The latter raise an important privacy distinction: analysing conversations on the phone or also relying on models in the cloud.
News verified: 14 October, 06:30–15 October, 06:30 CEST
In 60 seconds
- Business: a new European analysis shows growing adoption, but also difficulties incorporating AI into core processes.
- Singapore: DeepMind and GovTech present an on-device scam detection model; integration into applications will be gradual.
- Android: Google announces optional enhanced protection combining local detection and cloud analysis. Availability depends on the feature and device.

Using AI is not the same as transforming a business
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre published an analysis on 14 October showing that the share of firms using AI in ten strategic sectors rose from 7% in 2021 to 18% in 2025. Media, energy and electronic communications lead adoption.
The report distinguishes between adopting accessible tools and transforming production processes. It identifies a lack of specialist knowledge and regulatory uncertainty, including privacy, as prominent barriers.
Date and limits: the news is the report's publication on 14 October; the data cover 2021–2025, not October 2026. The 18% refers to the strategic sectors studied and does not, by itself, demonstrate productivity gains.
Why it matters For law firms and businesses, counting licences or users is insufficient. The practical implication is to assess which processes change, how their quality is controlled and what results are achieved.

Detecting a scam without sending the conversation to a server
DeepMind and GovTech Singapore announced on 14 October a Gemma model adapted to local scam conversations. The system uses a lightweight initial filter and a second contextual analysis to warn of possible manipulation.
According to the announcement, it will run on-device and access conversations with the user's consent when integrated into applications. Deployment will be gradual.
Date and limits: an announcement on 14 October about earlier development work. This is information from its promoters: it provides no public false-positive or false-negative rates and does not establish general availability in Spain or Norway.
Why it matters It offers a way to detect fraud built through extended conversations while keeping analysis close to the data. Its potential usefulness for professional communications will depend on the specific implementation.

Enhanced protection will also use AI in the cloud
In another announcement on 14 October, Google introduced an optional enhanced protection mode for Messages. It will combine local detection with Gemini models in Private AI Compute, its cloud processing environment. Google says this analysis uses a protected space that prevents third parties, including the company, from accessing the content.
The mode will arrive over the coming weeks. Other features have different schedules: call-forwarding protection is announced for early December on selected devices.
Limits: these are features and assurances announced by the provider, not independently tested here. This architecture should not be confused with the entirely on-device processing of the Singapore project.
Why it matters Enabling a security feature can change where a conversation is processed. On work phones, it is worth checking the conditions of that particular feature.

Selection criteria
I checked the selection against the latest editions in the official repository. I have not artificially filled five news slots: in Spain, I found an interview with AESIA's director published on the 14th, but could not consult the full text; it is excluded because verification was insufficient. In Norway, targeted searches mainly returned earlier announcements and agendas, without a sufficiently verified development to include.
The day's headlines about initial European supervision measures refer to information requests already described by the Commission on 12 October. I do not present them as newly adopted measures.
